The report on urban areas in England and Wales published on 17 June 2004 [more details...] was followed by the publication on 22 July of four further printed regional volumes covering all urban areas in each broad region.
Results for urban areas meet a widespread interest in information about towns and cities, and for comparisons between urban populations and with those living outside towns. The Key Statistics series includes results from all topics covered by the Census, and is designed for quick reference and comparison, but also to provide information for studies in greater depth.
The regional parts follow the same format as the printed report for England and Wales, but cover every settlement recognised as an urban area in each broad region, providing an alternative to the CD which supplements the national report. They also include Key Statistics for all sub-divisions created to reflect distinct localities within built up areas.
The reports include reference maps showing all urban areas and sub-divisions included in that volume (these detailed maps are not provided in either the report for England and Wales as a whole or the CD accompanying the report).
