Census Area Statistics for 2005 wards
Census Area Statistics (CAS) for 2005 wards in England and Wales, available from 30th November 2005, contain detailed results from the Census for a number of wards with boundary changes made by Statutory Instruments in 2004. A list of the wards included is available as an Excel file. They supplement the Census Area Statistics for wards and Output Areas released in August/September 2003, and the Census Area Statistics for 2004 wards in England and Wales (wards with boundary changes made by Statutory Instruments in 2003) released in January 2005.
Summary results for all wards with boundary changes made by Statutory Instruments during 2004 are also available in the Key Statistics for 2005 wards in England and Wales that were released in October 2005.
Census 2001: General and Quality reports published
The General report and The Quality report, two key evaluation reports from the 2001 Census in England and Wales, were published on 29 November. They review the entire Census operation, and together provide a comprehensive evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the Census operation. These are the last of the published reports from the 2001 Census. [More details...]
2011 Census Advisory Group papers
Census Advisory Groups are meeting during the period 7th November to 8th December 2005, and are being asked to give their views on a core set of items including the aims and principles for outputs from the 2011 Census, and the policy for small area output geography. The proposals build on the innovation of the 2001 Census, with 2001 Output Areas retained to give a stable small area geography. Papers on these, and other subjects currently under discussion with the Census Advisory Groups, are available on the ONS website. [More details...]
Key Statistics for 2005 wards in England and Wales
The Key Statistics for 2005 wards, available from 31st October 2005, supplements the Key Statistics for wards in England and Wales report that was published in June 2003 and the later complementary release in December 2004 of results for wards with boundary changes made by Statutory Instruments during 2003. Key Statistics for 2005 wards provides counts for all of the 426 wards in nineteen local authorities in the North East and North West of England that were subject to boundary changes made by Statutory Instruments during 2004. These wards were therefore not included in previous releases of Key Statistics for wards. A list of the changed wards and affected local authorities is provided as an Excel file.
UK Census based classification of Output Areas
ONS has released the UK 2001 Census based classification of Output Areas. It provides a picture of populations at the most local level, summarising patterns of similarity and difference, and follows the earlier release of classifications for local and health authorities, and for wards. All are now available without charge from the National Statistics website, and are designed for uses ranging from people who want to see how their neighbourhood fits into the broader picture to organisations wanting to arrange the provision of public and business services to particular types of area [More details...].
New Census web pages soon
The Census pages on the National Statistics website are undergoing a reorganisation to improve access to information about the Census, its products and its services. New pages are planned for the Autumn, and these will enable the user of Census data to easily identify the statistics they require and access the results.
2001 Census equivalents of county reports and monitors
Census Customer Services are asked by librarians and other users if there are equivalents to 1991 and earlier Census results which appeared in full in printed county reports or in summary as printed monitors. The equivalents of the entire set of county reports were released concurrently on two CDs which were provided as supplements to the National report for England and Wales, and which were widely distributed without charge [more details...]. The CDs remain available on request from Census Customer Services, normally without charge, and are suitable for use even if interest is mainly in one local area. Alternatively, the 2001 equivalent to the county reports can be viewed and downloaded online through the NOMIS service [more details and guidance for new users...].
The printed 1991 monitors have been superseded by the more extensive summary results from the 2001 Census available through Neighbourhood Statistics, and through the wide range of Key Statistics products [more details...].
Revised charges for commissioned output
ONS is continuing the service to provide specially customised and commissioned output from the 2001 and earlier Censuses on a cost recovery basis. However, with the completion of the main planned output from the 2001 Census, ONS have announced changes in the way that the charge for a table is calculated [more details...].
Neighbourhood Statistics relaunched
ONS has relaunched Neighbourhood Statistics, which includes summary results on all main topics from the 2001 Census, with new and improved features. The Access Small Areas newsletter gives details of neighbourhood profiles with a greater regeneration focus and new facilities to customise areas, charts maps and tables. There is new general guidance for NeSS users, and special guidance on finding Census figures for named places, through reference maps, and for specific topics has been updated.

Consultation on topics for a Census in 2011
As part of its research programme for the 2011 Census in England and Wales, ONS launched a programme of user consultation, focused on identifying those topics to be considered for inclusion in the next Census. An ONS Consultation Paper The 2011 Census: initial view on content for England and Wales, published on 16 May, invited responses by 5 August 2005, to which over 1,300 responses have been received. ONS plan to report on the main outcomes of the consultation initially at the next round of Census Advisory Group meetings in November and in a fuller response document early in 2006. Corrections and supplements to Census products
Despite the best efforts of the Office for National Statistics, some errors or anomalies have been identified in Census products following release, and a limited number of planned tables could not be included in the main releases. ONS apologises for any inconvenience. A list of all corrections has been set-up HERE. It will be up-dated as necessary, and links will be provided to corrected tables as soon as these are ready. Information on unprocessed forms has also been included.
