Are there any further Census Area Statistics tables for Output Areas that will be released to supplement the part 2 DVD?
No, the part 2 DVD completes the release of Census Area Statistics tables for Output Areas, wards and associated higher geographies.
Does the part 2 DVD contain any corrections to tables that were part of the first release in August 2003?
No, the part 2 DVD contains only tables that were not included in the first release. Corrections to tables contained in the first release will be released on DVD later in 2004.
How do I start using the DVD?
Put the DVD in your DVD drive. It will start up automatically and you will be presented with a screen that asks you to accept or decline the ONS conditions of supply. After accepting the conditions you will be presented with a screen containing a number of buttons that allows you to locate the data on the DVD and provide information about the DVD and about the Census.
Does the DVD run on an Apple Mac?
The facility to download and manipulate the data is not available to Mac users because SuperTABLE software cannot be installed on an Apple Mac.
Installation Do I have to install the contents of the DVD on my computer?
No, the contents can be accessed with the DVD in the DVD drive but SuperTABLE must be installed from the DVD. If you are connected to a network you may need to seek the assistance of your network administrator to install SuperTABLE. When you put the DVD in your DVD drive, the first screen that you see shows you the conditions of supply and provides you with options to view or install.
I am encountering issues when attempting to install and use SuperTABLE. For example, either error messages appear at installation or, once installed using an administrators account, users cannot start the application when they logon and have insufficient authority to access the appropriate folders. Can ONS help?
There are a number of reasons why an install of SuperTABLE may fail or prove difficult, and administration privileges applied to PCs can impede installation. Unfortunately ONS is unable to provide technical support regarding the installation of SuperTABLE, but further information can be found at the manufacturer’s website HERE or by emailing
support@str.com.au. Note that ONS has been informed by one customer that McAfee anti-virus software would not accept SuperTABLE. Disabling the virus check enabled them to install successfully.
I have installed SuperTABLE from a previous CD or DVD. Do I need to reinstall?
No, you do not need to install SuperTABLE from the DVD as versions of SuperTABLE included on previous CDs and DVDs can be used to view the tables on the CAS part 2 DVD. However, it is recommended that you install from the part 2 DVD, because the version of SuperTABLE included is new (Version 4.2.1), and provides a search facility which allows you to find Output Areas quickly in the SuperTABLE files. It can also be used to open tables provided on previous CDs and DVDs, including all versions of table CAST01 (which would not open with previous versions of SuperTABLE) from the first CAS release. You will need to uninstall previous versions of SuperTABLE before installing the new version.
Finding results How do I view the Census results?
Put the DVD in your DVD drive. It will start up automatically and you will be presented with a screen that asks you to accept or decline the Census conditions of supply.
On accepting the conditions of supply you will be presented with a screen with a series of buttons which provide information about which tables are on the DVD, and where they are located.
I have found the SuperTABLE files on the DVD, but there only seem to be files for tables CAS008-010 at ward and Output Area level. Where are the files for these tables for areas higher than ward level?
Tables CAS008-010, relating to migration, are provided on the DVD for Output Areas and wards only. Corresponding information for higher administrative areas can be obtained using tables S008-S010 from the National Report part 2. Users are invited to contact Census Customer Services if they have a particular requirement for these CAS tables for the higher geographical levels.
I am using two SuperTABLE files for table CAS010, one containing counts at ward level and above and one containing counts for Output Areas in the East Midlands. The layout of the tables in these files does not seem to match the layout in the other Output Area files - the 'All households’ row seems to be missing - what can I do?
The 'All households’ row is missing from these two files. The values for this row can be derived in SuperTABLE by creating an axis derivation. To do this, right click in the stub and chose Derivations > Add Axis Derivation. In the box that appears, first type ALL HOUSEHOLDS into the area called 'Derivation Label’ - this will create a new label in the stub. To define the counts for this row click the ‘Add to Expression’ button (which will add values to the 'Derivation Expression’ box) and then click OK. The new row will then appear in the stub labelled ALL HOUSEHOLDS.
Using SuperTABLE When I click on a SuperTABLE file to open it nothing happens for up to a minute. Is there a fault?
No. The SuperTABLE files are very large and can take up to a minute to open.
How do I use SuperTABLE?
A Census specific tutorial is available from the Help option within the SuperTABLE application.
Some footnotes are truncated when I copy files to other formats. What can I do?
Some of the footnotes in the Census Area Statistics can be truncated during save out. A list of table titles and footnotes is provided on the DVD.
I have looked at the SuperTABLE files on the DVD and there seem to be multiple files for some tables. Why is this?
For technical reasons it was not possible to include the complete geography for some tables in a single SuperTABLE file. Univariate tables relating to migration (UV23 and UV52) have, in addition to the 10 SuperTABLE files which contain counts for Output Areas in each Government Office Region, a further 7 SuperTABLE files. Each of these contains counts for the table for a specified geography, from England & Wales to ward level.
I am using the files for table UV23 and one of the files seems to have a row that is not in the other 16 files. Also, the table does not match outlines that are available on the National Statistics website. Which is correct?
The first row label 'ALL PEOPLE’ appears in the file for ENGLAND but is missing from the remaining 16 SuperTABLE files for this table - the label should read 'ALL PEOPLE’. The outline of the table available from the National Statistics website indicates that this row should contain data rather than being a label only. Similarly the outlines indicate that a further two rows should be present, one for inflow and one for outflow, but this is also incorrect. Users of the CSV versions of this table will need to note and take account of this difference.
Loading data into databases The data on the DVD is SuperTABLE format and is not suitable for loading into a database. In addition, the Save as CSV option does not produce a comma separated file that I can use for this purpose. Is the data available in other formats?
All the tables on the DVD are also available in a CSV format specifically designed by ONS for loading into database systems, and can be obtained free of charge by contacting Census Customer Services using the contact details in Section 7.
General I think that I have found some errors on the DVD, how do I confirm this and find out if they have been corrected?
It is possible that some errors have been discovered on the DVD since it was published. Any such errors will be noted in the Census product error log available HERE which is regularly updated. As well as explaining any errors, the log contains details of how the error has been corrected; how the corrected information can be obtained; and, where applicable, links to further information If the error log does not list the specific error you have found, please contact Census Customer Services using the contact details listed below.
