A census is a survey of all people and households in the country. It provides essential information from national to neighbourhood level for government, business, and the community.
The most recent census was on 29 April 2001. Plans are being made for the next census to take place on 27 March 2011.
Although the Office for National Statistics (ONS) does hold a small number of data covering the census in Scotland and Northern Ireland, it is not the source for these data. Nor is it responsible for the development of future censuses in these countries. Please contact the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA).
New: 27 March 2011 has been chosen as the planned date of the next Census in England and Wales. A rehearsal for the 2011 Census will be carried out in 2009, and three rehearsal areas have also been announced by ONS. More
