Households with access to a car or van: 1972 to 2002
In 1972, just over half (52 per cent) of households had access to at least one car or van. This proportion had increased to 71 per cent by 1995, and in 2002 almost three quarters (73 per cent) of all households had access to a car.
The proportion of households with one car has remained relatively constant during this time, and was 45 per cent in 2002.
However, the proportion of households with two or more cars or vans has increased substantially. In 1972, 8 per cent of households had two cars and 1 per cent had three or more cars. By 1995 22 per cent had two cars and 4 per cent had three or more. These figures have remained relatively constant since then (22 and 5 per cent respectively in 2002).
