Quarterly changes in Public Sector Employment, United Kingdom
Public sector employment increased by 23,000 (seasonally adjusted) in the third quarter of 2009 to 6.093 million.
Employment in central government increased by 31,000. Employment in local government decreased by 3,000 and public corporations decreased by 5,000.
The number of employees in the Civil Service increased by 4,000.
Employment in the private sector increased by 29,000 in the third quarter.
Please note: The 2008 Q4 employment increase reflects the classification of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group and Lloyds Banking Group to the public sector (with effect from 13 October 2008).
