Total net investment
Total net investment by insurance companies, pension funds and trusts was provisionally estimated to have been £23.5 billion in the second quarter of 2009, a rise of £13.1 billion on the revised first quarter net investment figure of £10.3 billion. Overseas securities net investment increased by £11.5 billion, going from a net investment of £2.0 billion in the first quarter to a net investment of £13.4 billion in the second quarter. There were smaller net investment increases in other assets, UK company securities and British government sterling securities of £2.4 billion, £1.1 billion and £0.1 billion respectively. These increases were only partly offset by a decrease in net investment of £2.0 billion in short-term assets.
In the second quarter of 2009 long-term insurance funds were provisionally estimated to have had net investment of £9.6 billion, an increase of £8.0 billion on the net investment figure of £1.6 billion shown in the first quarter of 2009. General insurance funds showed net investment of £0.9 billion, a £1.5 billion decrease on the previous quarter, while net investment by self-administered pension funds increased by £3.4 billion to show a net investment of £5.5 billion. Investment trusts reported net investment of £0.1 billion in the second quarter of 2009 compared with a net disinvestment of £0.2 billion in the first quarter of 2009, while net investment by unit trusts and property unit trusts increased by £2.1 billion to show a net investment of £10.4 billion.
