Sharp decrease in lending to buy dwellings

• Total household expenditure in the UK increased by more than two and a half times between 1971 and 2007. (Figure 6.1) Latest information on family spending
• In 2007, the volume of household expenditure by UK tourists abroad, at £32.3 billion, was more than eight times greater than in 1971. (Table 6.3)
• Average weekly household expenditure in the UK for couples with dependent children was £657.70 in 2007, compared with £389.90 for lone parents with dependent children. (Table 6.5)
• Household ownership of mobile phones increased from 20 per cent of UK households to 78 per cent between 1997/98 and 2007. (Figure 6.7)
• Net lending secured on dwellings in the UK reached the most recent peak of £31.0 billion in the last quarter of 2006, before falling to £4.4 billion by the third quarter of 2008. (Figure 6.8)
• Despite total household debt in the UK increasing more than threefold between 1987 and 2007, it remained around 90 per cent of annual household disposable income because disposable income also increased. (Figure 6.9)
