Threefold increase in early years education enrolment

• The proportion of three and four-year-olds enrolled in all schools in the UK tripled from 21 per cent in 1970/71 to 64 per cent in 2007/08. (Figure 3.1) Latest information on early years education
• The most common reason for exclusion from school in England in 2006/07 was persistent disruptive behaviour, which accounted for 31 per cent of all permanent exclusions. (Table 3.5)
• In 2007, 59 per cent of parents in England whose child was in Year one or two were always confident helping with homework compared with 17 per cent of parents whose child was in Years ten to 12. (Figure 3.6)
• In 2007/08 16 per cent of pupils in maintained nursery and primary schools in the UK were eligible for free school meals, and 13 per cent took them. (Table 3.7)
• Around 673,000 National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) were awarded in the UK in 2006/07 compared with around 153,000 in 1991/92. (Page 40)
• Married or cohabiting parents in the UK in the second quarter of 2008 were more likely to be educated to degree level or higher than lone parents, 23 per cent compared with 11 per cent. (Table 3.19)
