Comparison of bonuses for whole economy and financial sector , Great Britain
Bonus payments across the whole economy amounted to about £19 billion in the period December 2008 to April 2009, down by some £9 billion on the same period a year earlier. Payments in the financial sector amounted to about £8.5 billion,a little over half the level of the previous year.
The declines in bonus payments in 2009 follow a period of relatively strong growth. Looking at the period 2001 to 2008 as a whole, payments in the whole economy doubled from about £14 billion to about £28 billion, while payments in the financial sector increased from £6.5 billion to £16 billion.

The figures are derived from the experimental Average Weekly Earnings series. All data relates to the period December of the previous year to April in the current year, for example, 2009 relates to the period December 2008 to April 2009.
