Average weekly household expenditure in relation to the UK average, 2003/04 to 2005/06
London households on average have the highest incomes and spend the most. Those in the North East have the lowest average income and expenditure.
In the three-year period from 2003/04 to 2005/06, households in London spent on average £500 per week. This was 16 per cent more than the UK average of £432 and 42 per cent more than the North East at £352.
The average spent on food and non-alcoholic drink was £45 per household per week. Households in Northern Ireland were the highest spenders on food at £49, while households in the North East and Yorkshire and The Humber were the lowest at £40.
An element of household expenditure which showed considerable variability was housing, fuel and power. In London this averaged £61 per week, double the £30 per week spent in the North East. A similar pattern was seen in expenditure on transport. Here, households in the South East spent an average of £70 per week, 50 per cent higher than North East households at £47 per week.
Average gross weekly household income in London in the period 2003/04 to 2005/06 was £766 and in the North East it was £455.
Individually, men and women in London had the highest average total incomes in 2004/05 at £36,000 for men and £23,000 for women. These were around 30 per cent greater than the UK average for each sex. Men continued to have higher incomes, averaging over 50 per cent more than women. The widest income gap was in the South East with men having an extra £14,000, over 70 per cent more than women in the region.
