• Between 2000 and 2004/05, the proportion worried about violent crime in England and Wales fell from 24 to 17 per cent, but has since begun to rise. (Figure 9.9)

• In 2006/07, around one-third of crime recorded by the police in Great Britain was theft and handling stolen goods. The most common recorded crime in Northern Ireland was criminal damage (30 per cent). (Figure 9.2)
• Vandalism accounted for more than one-quarter of BCS crime in 2006/07 and was the only offence group with a significant increase in offences (10 per cent) since 2005/06. (Page 122)
• In England and Wales 55 per cent of adult offenders released from prison or starting community service in the first quarter of 2004 re-offended within two years and were subsequently reconvicted. (Page 132)
• The 2006/07 BCS showed that 79 per cent of the public are confident that the Criminal Justice System (CJS) respects the rights of the accused, while only 25 per cent are confident that it is effective in dealing with young people. (Table 9.20)
