Children under five in schools as a percentage of all three and four year olds, UK
• The proportion of three and four year olds enrolled in all schools in the United Kingdom tripled from 21 per cent in 1970/71 to 65 per cent in 2003/04. (Figure 3.1)
• The rate of permanent exclusion in England among Black Caribbean pupils has halved since 1997/98, to 37 for every 10,000 pupils of compulsory school age in 2002/03. This was still three times the rate for White pupils. (Figure 3.7)
• With the exception of mathematics and science at Key Stage 2, in 2004, girls outperformed boys in England in all subjects at Key Stages 1, 2 and 3; the greatest differences were for English. (Table 3.11)
• One in six people of working age in Great Britain held a degree or equivalent qualification in 2003/04. (Table 3.16)
• There were 189,000 support staff in classrooms in maintained schools in England in 2004, twice as many as in 1996. (Figure 3.22)
