Wood products: apparent consumption, United Kingdom
Apparent consumption of sawnwood increased 7.2 per cent between 2006 and 2007, from 10,454 to 11,210 thousand cubic metres. UK production increased by 8.2 per cent and year on year imports rose 5.5 per cent. Sawnwood is timber that has been cut into planks from logs and includes both softwood and hardwood.
Year on year apparent consumption of wood based panels rose from 6,673 thousand cubic metres in 2006 to 6,928 thousand cubic metres in 2007. This increase of 3.8 per cent, mainly represents higher levels of imports. Wood based panels include particle board, fibreboard, plywood and veneer sheets and can be made from softwood or hardwood.
Between 2006 and 2007, apparent consumption of paper fell 1.5 per cent from 12,327 thousand tonnes to 12,141 thousand tonnes. This was driven by falls seen in UK production.
These data are subject to annual fluctuation and the longer term trend shows that since 1994 there has been a rise of 9.5 per cent in apparent consumption of sawnwood, a 26.0 per cent rise in the consumption of wood based panels and a 16.9 per cent rise in apparent consumption of paper.
