Consumer Prices Index and Retail Prices Index: The 2004 Basket of Goods and Services
Details of the shopping basket used in 2004 to compile the CPI and RPI.
As part of a process of continual improvement, and also to keep the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) and Retail Prices Index (RPI) representative of consumer spending patterns over time, the items that are priced in compiling the indices are reviewed each year. This article explains the review process and, in particular, how and why the various items in the CPI and RPI baskets are chosen, and describes the changes to the basket in 2004.
