Measuring the output and productivity of our public services, such as healthcare and education, is important for public accountability. Taxpayers, users and providers of public services have an interest in how government spends its money on these services and in whether services are good value for money. This article describes recent improvements made by the Office for National Statistics to measures of government output, and reports the impact of doing so on estimates of GDP. It also describes further developments proposed for future inclusion in the National Accounts.
