Who are the 'Other' ethnic groups?
The 'Other' groups encompass many smaller ethnic groups, each with distinct demographic and socio-economic characteristics.
The 2001 Census identified a minority of people who felt that they did not belong to any of the main ethnic groups and classified themselves as belonging to an 'Other' ethnic group – Other White, Other Asian, Other Black or Other Ethnic.
The 'Other' ethnic groups are far from homogeneous. Each group encompasses a number of distinct smaller groups, often having little in common with each other: originating from different parts of the world; having different religious beliefs; having different demographic characteristics; and coming from different socio-economic backgrounds. 'Who are the 'Other' ethnic groups?' profiles these diverse ethnic groups, helping to put into context census results for each of the ‘Other’ groups as a whole.
