International Comparisons of Productivity: better data improve UK productivity position
Detailed results for the February 2004 release of International Comparisons of Productivity covering 1990 to 2002.
New estimates of purchasing power parities from the OECD mean that the UK’s productivity performance relative to that in other countries was better than previously thought.
Relative to the average of all G7 countries excluding the UK, GDP per worker in 2002 was 112.8 on the new estimates compared with 116.5 on the old figures. Relative productivity measures are based on UK=100; therefore any fall in these indices is an improvement in the UK's relative productivity performance.
The UK’s productivity has improved significantly over the last 10 years compared with that in other countries, but the level of productivity in the UK remains below that in other G7 countries taken as a block, by around 13 percentage points.
