Developing estimates of relative regional consumer price levels
ONS's plans for the development of regional comparisons of price levels in the short-term and an initial discussion of longer-term options for the production of regional price level
The ONS intends to publish estimates in autumn 2003 of regional price levels compared against the national average.
This will be based on the results of a 2000 survey of regional price levels, which will be updated where possible and extended to some areas of expenditure not previously covered. ONS plans to repeat this exercise in 2004; this will involve a rerun of the 2000 survey.
Regional price level surveys were considered in the Allsopp Review of Statistics for Economic Policymaking (the final report was published in March 2004). The approach taken in both the 2003 and 2004 regional price surveys was supported by the Review.
