Improving the method used to calculate the volume of healthcare inputs
This article discusses three improvements to the calculation method for the volume of healthcare inputs
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) publishes estimates of public service output and productivity for total public services, and by service area. Public service productivity is measured by dividing an index of output by an index of the volume of inputs.
This article discusses three improvements to the calculation method for the volume of healthcare inputs. The effect of each change is illustrated using data previously published in Total Public Service Output and Productivity in June 2009. The overall impact is also described.
The new methods will be used to calculate the volume of healthcare inputs series in future public service productivity publications, including the next article on healthcare productivity (to be published on 24 March 2010).
