Neighbourhood renewal targets are generally concerned with reducing different forms of deprivation over time. In order to do this, data are needed to identify areas that are most in need, to establish a baseline by which targets can be set, and to measure the impact of policies and initiatives. This article shows how the Indices of Deprivation (2004) can be used to identify areas of concern, and follows an illustrated example to demonstrate how other data sources can be applied to assess improvement (or lack of it) over time.
