Continuing improvements to the quality of public sector employment statistics include more timely releases and the introduction of seasonally adjusted series. These are now being published, back to 1999, on both a headcount and full-time equivalent basis, with break- downs by sector classification and by broad industry groups. Various methodological issues are explained. Commentary is included on the trends shown by these new series and earlier annual data. Public sector employment declined between 1991 and 1998 and then increased until Q2 2005. Since then it has levelled off, to stand at 5.84 million, or 20.2 per cent of total employment in Q2 2006.
