This article explains the Office for National Statistics' (ONS) National Accounts classification decisions relating to public sector broadcasting. There are three public sector broadcasters operating in the United Kingdom. These are the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the Channel Four Television Corporation (Channel 4) and Sianel Pedwar Cymru (S4C, Channel Four Wales).
The article details how the reclassification of the "licence fee" as a tax results in the BBC being reclassified from the public non-financial corporations sub-sector to the central government sector. S4C has also been reclassified to the central government sector from its inception. Channel 4 is, and remains, classified as a public non-financial corporation.
