Revisions to economic statistics: recent developments
A progress report on ONS’ action plan and summary of steps to extend revisions analysis and improve communication.
In its review of Revisions to Economic Statistics (Statistics Commission 2004), the Statistics Commission agreed that: “For most economic statistics revisions are the norm”
As well as rightly noting that “Procedures for making revisions,,,,,. should be subject to continuous review and improvement” and also that “Communication about the likelihood of revisions does, however, need to be improved”.
The ONS has developed an action plan in response to the Commission’s review and reports on the progress against this plan. The rest of this note summarises the steps ONS has taken to extend its analysis of revisions and to improve communication about them.
