This article describes the sources and methods used in estimating the functional and provider breakdown of expenditure on health by charities in the UK and presents estimates for the calendar year 2002.
The charitable sector in the UK is large with over 180,000 registered charities in 2002 and charitable expenditure in 2001/2002 of £20.4 billion. UK charities are active in a large range of charitable causes, including education, arts, social welfare, international aid and health.
This article describes the functional and provider breakdown of charitable expenditure on health in the UK for the calendar year 2002. The estimates have been produced as part of the UK Health Accounts project described in previous Economic Trends articles.
The results show that expenditure on health by charities is concentrated on long-term care and prevention and public health services.
