Ageing in the UK

Ageing in the UK is an interactive mapping tool which allows you to analyse the age structure of the population at the Local Authority (LA) level more easily. You can see how the population has aged over time and is projected to continue to age by selecting from a list of indicators of population ageing, such as median age, and animating the map. Data can be extracted from the tool by selecting a local authority.

Underlying data

The indicators available in the mapping tool have been calculated using population estimates and projections for LAs and also the UK as a whole.

Definitions

State Pension Age 'The qualifying age for claiming a state pension in the UK'. The figures relating to State Pension Age take account of the equalisation of State Pension Age for men and women between 2010 and 2020 and the rise in the State Pension Age to 68 for both men and women over the 22-year period from 2024.

Median Age 'The mid-point at which half the population is younger/older'
