Statisticians working in the Government Statistical Service (GSS) and the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) produce and publish a wide range of statistical 'outputs' and 'products'. They do this under the professional management of the Head of Profession for Statistics in each Department, Administration or Agency.

These products can take the form of First Releases, Statistical Bulletins, Publications, Compendia, Reference Volumes and the like, the main purpose of which is to disseminate collated and compiled statistics to users in their finished state. Around 80% of these products are described as 'National Statistics' which means that they have been produced in accordance with the Framework for National Statistics, and comply with the principles and practices embodied in the National Statistics Code of Practice and supporting Protocols.
