Code of Practice

The United Kingdom Statistics Authority, which was established as part of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007, is now responsible for the development and maintainence of a new Code of Practice for Statistics which sets out the professional standards which official statisticians are expected to meet. The Authority's proposals for a new Code are currently subject to a public consulation and the final version of their new Code is likely to be published by the end of 2008. Thereafter, the Authority will initiate a programme for assessing official statistics, wherever produced, for compliance with this Code, as a preliminary to deciding whether to give them formal accreditation as 'National Statistics'.

Until that time, the existing National Statistics Code of Practice and its 12 supporting Protocols will remain in force.
