SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is a relatively new data format, which enables you to interact with the map.
Map Key
The map can be viewed at three levels. To change the level click 'SUPERGROUP', 'GROUP' or 'SUBGROUP' in the top left hand corner of the screen. This level can only be changed when the map is 'active', if the graph is active click on the map to reactivate it. A particular cluster can be viewed in isolation by clicking on the legend. To bring back the full map, click on the legend again.
Zoom Controls
To navigate the map, use the controls below the map to zoom in and out and pan in all four directions. To reset the map click on 'UK'.
Cluster Hierarchy
As you move the cursor over a local authority the local authority name and the cluster hierarchy which it belongs to will appear in the bottom left-hand corner.
The Graph
When viewing the local authority and health area classification the graph facility will also open. The bar chart for the demographic dimension will open by default. There is no graph facility for the ward classification due to the size of the datasets reqiured.
Range Standardisation
The graph shows the range-standardised value. This enables a comparison to be made between different variables. Further explanation of the standardisation method can be found in the methodology paper.
The Dimensions
To explore the full range of variables in the classification click on the local authority of your choice and click on the arrow at the end of the title bar and select a new dimension from the pull-down menu.
Variable Labels
When you move the cursor over a bar on the chart the variable label, the value of that variable for the local authority, the average value for the cluster level shown on the map and the minimum and maximum value for that variable are revealed underneath the chart.
