National Statistics 2001 Area Classification of Health Areas
The health area classification covers Primary Care Organisations in England, Local Health Boards in Wales, Health Board areas in Scotland and Health and Social Services Boards in Northern Ireland. Because of the large sizes of the health areas in Scotland and Northern Ireland we do not recommend the use of this classification if you plan on only comparing health areas in Scotland or Northern Ireland.
Primary Care Organisation boundaries in England were changed in October 2006 and as a result this health area classification was amended to take on board these changes. The classification remains unchanged in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The names used for the supergroups, groups and subgroups in the health area classification are the same as in the local authority classification because of the method used to create the health area classification.
