Collecting data on religion

The 2001 Census included a question on religion for the first time.

The concepts of ethnic group and religion overlap to some extent, particularly for some groups such as Sikhs and Muslims.

Therefore, it is strongly recommended that wherever possible a question on religion as well as ethnic group should be included as part of data collection.
