About the guide to pension statistics
Where the data come from and what they tell us

This guide to pension statistics provides information relating to statistics on pension contributions, pensions in payment and national aggregates. We welcome comments about this guide.

The guide provides links to the main data sources dealing with private pension statistics. Where possible, links are given to tables, or to the title page of online publications. Not all the data are available online.

There are two main categories of private pension scheme: occupational pensions and personal pensions. Occupational schemes are organised by employers or a group of employers on behalf of their employees. Personal pension schemes enable people to make individual pension provision, usually through investment products offered by a financial institution.
