Data Editing and Imputation
Dealing with data errors and missing values

What is data editing and imputation?
Data editing is about detecting and correcting errors in the information returned by the contributors of the data. Imputation is a procedure used for entering a value for a specific data item where the response is missing or unusable.

Aims
The aim is to provide expertise and advice on developing and implementing cost-effective editing and imputation for all ONS data sources, including household and business surveys and administrative sources.

Current and planned areas of work

  • Provision of support and advice to business areas on editing and imputation procedures
  • production and dissemination of standards and guidance on good practice in editing and imputation
  • exploration of methods and tools to support graphical and output editing
  • identification and evaluation of generalised edit and imputation tools for possible inclusion in ONS' new statistical infrastructure
  • participation in development of appropriate quality measures associated with editing and imputation processes
