The Office for National Statistics is researching ways to better provide information on equality. These development projects will be documented in these pages.

Equalities data review
The ONS-led review of equality data was guided by a cross-Government task force with diversity and equality stakeholders. The starting point was a measurement framework proposed in the Cabinet Office-commissioned Equalities Review which included the following equality characteristics: gender, transgender, ethnicity, disability, age, sexual orientation, religion/belief, and socio-economic status.

Sexual Identity Project
The ONS Sexual Identity Project was established in 2006 to address user requirements for information on sexual identity. There are three main objectives: to develop questioning that can be used on social surveys and for equality monitoring purposes; to test and implement the questioning in a social survey; and provide guidance on the administration of questioning.

Finding information on equality

A key finding of the equalities data review was that equality data and information already exist but is not always easy to find. In response, ONS has located all of its equality content within this section which will continue to expand as additional equality data become available.
