The Chair and the UK Statistics Authority
The Statistics Authority is a Non-Ministerial Department (NMD) with a non-executive Chairman who, along with the National Statistician, is appointed by Her Majesty. The Statistics Authority also comprises a majority of seven non-executive members, and three executive members, one of whom is the National Statistician. Sir Michael Scholar has been appointed by Her Majesty as the Statistics Authority's non-executive Chair, and after consulting ministers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the Minister of the Cabinet Office has appointed the following people to join him on the Statistics Authority as the first non-executive directors: Partha Dasgupta, Moira Gibb, Sir Alan Langlands, Stephen Nickell, David Rhind, Lord David Rowe-Beddoe, and Adrian Smith.
The National Statistician, Karen Dunnell, will be the Statistics Authority's principal adviser on professional statistical matters as well as the Statistics Authority's Chief Executive. She will be accountable to the Statistics Authority for the operation of the Statistics Authority's executive office.
The non-executive members of the Statistics Authority have appointed Richard Aldrit as Head of Assessment to act as their principal adviser on the assessment and re-assessment of official statistics.
The Statistics Authority may have other employees as needed, all of whom will be civil servants. These include staff in the Statistics Authority's executive office who are involved in the production of statistics, the Statistics Authority's own Secretariat, and those engaged to work on assessing official statistics against the Statistics Authority's Code of Practice.
