Included with the release of the Annual Business Inquiry 2006 provisional regional results are revised figures for the ABI Regional Results for 2005. This is the second release of data for 2005, which is open to full revision.
Within industry 23.20 (Manufacture of refined petroleum products) and 24.14 (Manufacture of other basic organic chemicals) there have been significant revisions to Turnover, Purchases and GVA for both 2005 and 2006. This is due to a large reclassification of a business from Class 23.20 to Class 24.14 that came to light during the processing of the 2006 ABI inquiry. Further, for both 2005 and 2006, there has been an additional upward revision to Class 24.14 to correct underestimation.
Within industry 92.20 (Radio and television activities) a significant revision has been made to 2005 Turnover and GVA data after some overestimation was identified.
The overestimation has also been identified for earlier years but in conjunction with current Annual Business Inquiry (ABI) revision policy there will be no revision to published data for years prior to 2005.
Due to the methodology of the regional estimation the revisions are across all regions and divisions. Details of individual revisions are not provided.
These data, at the all industry level, are now consistent with the UK National estimates, at the all industry level, released on 17 June 2008.

Further analysis of figures for Subsection CA (Mining and quarrying of energy producing materials) has suggested that the turnover amounts recorded for 2003 were in some cases too low. A correction has therefore been made.
Further analysis of Section E (Electricity, gas and water supply) has shown that purchases of electricity and gas for resale were in some cases understated and this figure has therefore been revised.
At the June release the following statement was made for SIC(2003) 74.15:
'Within 74.15 (Management activities of holding companies), the total turnover has risen from £1.71 billion in 2002 to £9.87 billion in 2003. Further investigation of the data for 2003 is currently taking place as there is a possibility data has been overestimated; more information will be made available when these investigations are complete and if necessary, revised figures will be published in due course'.
Initial investigation of the data has taken place and total turnover has been revised from £9.87 billion to £5.73 billion; investigations will continue and it is anticipated there will be a further fall in the figures to be published in June 2006. This revision has also had an effect on other SIC(2003) classifications.

Further work to improve the quality of regional data has led to revisions to the UK data for 1997, 1998 and 1999. These amendments are necessary to ensure that the regional and UK data stay consistent. The main revisions are:
At the A-O level and the C-O level, across all variables, for 1997, 1998 and 1999 the changes are all within +/- 0.2%.
The most significant change (in percentage terms) is for class 24.14 (manufacture of other organic chemicals) in 1997 with revisions to all variables and the change is generally around 17% for most variables.
The largest change (in percentage terms) for total net capex and total net capex acquisitions is within group 31.2 (manufacture of electricity distribution and control apparatus) for 1999 with changes of -36.9% and -34.0% respectively.
Stocks figures have also seen some large revisions including:
Group 19.3 (manufacture of footwear) in 1998 with changes of -35.8% and -35.0% in stocks at beginning and end of year respectively, with a net effect of a stocks increase during year of 13.6%.
Group 35.2 (manufacture of railway and tramway locomotives and rolling stock) in 1998 with changes of 50.6% and 39.7% in stocks at beginning and end of year respectively, with a net effect of a stocks increase during year of 12.4%. This group also has a high percentage change of -125.3% for approximate GVA but with the actual value change is less significant, rising from -£17 million to +£4 million.
Details of the revisions are shown in the Revisions excel spreadsheet
The calculation of the 'Share of turnover accounted for by the top 20 companies' has been improved to ensure consistency over all sectors. An explanation of the calculation is available here

Point in time and year average employment values for 1998 - 2000 for industries 7481 - 7484 (Miscellaneous business activities not elsewhere classified) have been amended following the identification of an error at publication.
There are no changes to higher level aggregates and all other industries and variables remain the same.
22 January 2003
The Regional ABI financial data has been amended and is released today. The data was withdrawn on 3 December 2002 following identification of an error which is detailed below.
3 December 2002
An error has been identified within the Regional ABI financial data published by ONS on 18 September.
Public sector organisations have been incorrectly included in the population in Sections M (Education) and N (Health & Social Work). This mistake has led to errors in the regional estimates for these sections although the totals for the UK as a whole are correct. All other sections are affected by a relatively minor compensating error.
Sections M and N have been temporarily removed from the dataset with immediate effect. It is estimated that all other sections are currently under-estimated by around 2%. Remaining data can still be used for comparisons within and across sections, regions and over time as the impact on these will be well within usual margins of error for this kind of information. ONS will revise data for all sections and release these in mid January. At this time bespoke regional analysis will re-commence.
Minor revisions to approximate Gross Value Added for 1997 in the construction sector and to higher level aggregates.
Approximate GVA for construction sector has been revised from £33,816 million to £33,630 million.
This revision has been necessary due to work currently taking place on the 1997 regional data which uncovered an inconsistency between the various sectors of ABI. In order to keep the UK and regional data consistent it was decided to issue the revision to the UK data.
2
Minor revisions to all variables for 1998 in the production sector and to higher level aggregates.
These revisions have been necessary due to work undertaken during the production of the 1998 regional results. An error in the data was discovered, which whilst it did not impact greatly on the UK data, had a major impact on the regional data. In order to keep the UK and regional data consistent it was decided to issue the revision to the UK data.
