Retail Commodity data at 3 digit SIC was made available on-line for the first time in June 2002. This is part of the Annual Business Inquiry (ABI) strategy to increase the amount of data available free of charge. If you have any comments or suggestions on this page then please email ABI publication and analysis
The change from SIC(92) to SIC(2003) has no impact on 3 digit SIC commodity data.
With effect from the 2003 inquiry there were changes made to inquiry forms and notes in order to increase clarification, and improve the quality of the commodity headings.
The classification of the retail industry's commodity data in the ABI has been changed with effect from the 2000 inquiry, to be consistent with the European Classification of Individual Consumption by Purpose (COICOP).
The industry's commodity series for the years 1997 to 1999 have been recalculated on the same classification basis to provide a consistent dataset for that period.
The commodity details from ABI are not the same as those for household expenditure in the National Accounts Blue Book and the Input-Output Analyses for two reasons.
Household final consumption expenditure includes expenditure on commodities sold by all types of seller, not just by businesses classified as retailers in the ABI. However, household final consumption expenditure does not include sales by retailers to businesses.
The COICOP detail from ABI for retailers and similar information for retail sales by non-retail businesses has not been fully incorporated in the Blue Book because long-run revisions to the National Accounts, necessary to reconcile results from the 2000 ABI and onwards with earlier years' retail data, have not been made.
For this year's National Accounts, only the revised total retail business information from the ABI has been used to provide a benchmark in deriving estimates of total household final consumption expenditure on goods sold by retailers and non-retailers. This has been supplemented by growth-rate movements of many of the commodities.
