For some people religion is an important part of their lives providing spiritual inspiration, contact with others and a means to participate in the life of the local community. Membership of Trinitarian churches was lower at the end of the twentieth century than at its beginning. In 1970, 9.3 million people in the United Kingdom were active members of a Trinitarian church, but this has declined by almost a third to 6.6 million in 1990.
