The age-standardised prescribing rates have been calculated using the European standard population. These age-standardised rates behave differently from the crude rates because the age structure of those with atrial fibrillation is very different from that of the European standard population. As a consequence, we would advise researchers interested in the prescribing rates to use the crude rates only.
