Fertility rates: by age of mother at childbirth: Social Trends 34
In general, fertility rates for women aged 30 and over have increased since the 1980s while those for women aged under 30 have declined. In 2002 the fertility rate for women aged 25 to 29 was still the highest but only slightly greater than the rate for the 30 to 34 age group which, since 1992, has exceeded that for those aged 20 to 24. Increased female participation in education and the labour market, and the greater choice and effectiveness of contraception, have encouraged the trend towards later childbearing, and smaller families.
