Despite the high rate of teenage pregnancy in the United Kingdom, there is an overall trend towards later childbearing. In England and Wales the average age of mothers at childbirth has increased by three years since 1971, rising from 26.2 years to 29.1 years in 2000. Over the last decade the average age of women at the birth of their first child has risen by one and a half years, to reach 27.1 in 2000.
Information on the average age at first birth over the last 30 years is only available for married women. The average age of women giving birth for the first time inside marriage has increased by almost six years since 1971.
