Passenger death rates: by mode of transport 1981-1999: Social Trends 31
Despite the improvements in road safety in recent years, it is still much safer to use public transport than private. Passenger death rates for travel by car, bicycle, on foot and especially motorcycle are higher than deaths on public transport, even though rail deaths in 1999 included the major accident at Ladbroke Grove, which resulted in 31 deaths and 227 injuries.
