Health expectancy combines life expectancy and population data with data on the health of a population to give an index of the expected remaining years of healthy life.
ONS calculates two types of health expectancy: (1) Healthy Life Expectancy (HLE) defines healthy life as years in good or fairly good self-perceived general health. (2) Disability-free Life Expectancy (DFLE) defines healthy life as years free from limiting longstanding illness.
The methodology used to calculate the health expectancies was reported in an article in Health Statistics Quarterly (HSQ) 26.
Please note that the data for Health Expectancies for Local Authorities was revised on 02/08/2007. The original data are available from the Morbidity and Health Care team. View more information about this product
