Participation in home-based leisure activities: by gender, 1977 to 1996-97: Social Trends 30
There are some striking differences in the pursuits undertaken by men and women in their own homes. In 1996-97 a higher proportion of men than women in Great Britain had done some DIY in the four weeks before they were interviewed. The situation was reversed as far as dressmaking, needlework or knitting was concerned, with 37 per cent of women taking part in such activities in the previous four weeks compared with only 3 per cent of men.
Over the last 20 years there have been several changes in participation in home-based leisure activities. For example, a smaller proportion of women participated in dressmaking, sewing or knitting in 1996-97 than in 1977, while the proportions doing DIY and gardening grew.
