Just over 9.5 million BCS crimes, around three quarters of the total, are comparable with those recorded by police statistics, with an estimated 43 per cent of these crimes being reported to the police. Of those reported, an estimated 68 per cent were recorded by the police. The proportion of crimes reported to the police varies according to the type of offence. Reasons for not reporting crimes to the police commonly include the perception on the part of the victim that the incident was too trivial, that the police could not do anything, or that the matter was dealt with privately.
