Domestic energy consumption increased by 36 per cent between 1971 and 2001, from 35.6 to 48.5 million tonnes of oil equivalent. However, in terms of energy use per household the increase was only 5 per cent, from 1,870 to 1,960 kilograms of oil equivalent per household. Growth in the number of households over the period, in the proportion of households with central heating, and in the ownership of household electrical appliances, have to an extent been offset by improvements in energy efficiency.
In 2001, 85 per cent of energy used in households was for space or water heating. In 1971, 34 per cent of homes in Great Britain were centrally heated - by 2001, this had increased to 90 per cent. The increase in the use of energy for space heating has, however, been somewhat offset by increase...
