Description:
Rivers and canals in the United Kingdom are generally of a good quality, and both chemical and biological quality has improved in recent years. In particular, the chemical quality of rivers in England improved markedly between 1990 and 2001, although by the latter date England still had the lowest percentage of river length in a good or fair condition of any of the constituent countries of the United Kingdom. River water quality is a headline indicator of sustainable development, and improvements in water quality since 1990 are thought to be largely attributable to the impact of the investment programme of the water industry and pollution control measures. However, the chemical quality of rivers and canals is not only affected by human activity. Lower than average rainfall and low river flows can also have an adverse effect on river quality through a reduced dilution of pollutants.
