Frequency of participation in voluntary activities: by gender, 1998: Social Trends 31
The 1998 British Social Attitudes Survey asked adults aged 18 and over in Great Britain if they had done any voluntary work in the previous 12 months (that is, any unpaid activity of benefit or service to the community or people other than friends or family). Approximately one in five adults reported that they had done unpaid charitable work in the last year and this did not vary significantly by gender: one in five men and about one in four women said that they had volunteered for charitable activities. The least supported were political activities: just 4 per cent of men and 2 per cent of women who responded participated in these activities in the year before interview.
