Major contributors to road accidents are excessive speed and too much alcohol or the use of illicit drugs. Over the years there have been many campaigns to discourage drink-driving and the numbers of casualties from road accidents involving illegal alcohol levels have fallen. In 1999, 12 per cent of people dying in road accidents in Great Britain tested positive for illegal levels of alcohol.
