The Home Office compiles data on criminal court proceedings at magistrates' courts. Data cover prosecutions, convictions and types of sentence passed and are available by age, sex and detailed offence classification.

Data cover England and Wales and are available by police force area, commission of the peace area and petty sessional division.

The series dates back to 1893 and is published annually. Summary figures for 1998 were published in November 1999 and more detailed figures in March 2000. Usually summary figures for a given year are published in the following September with detailed figures being published in November.
